History in the Making
Six societies dedicated to preserving history in Armstrong County made history in 2004. The Community Foundation initiated and facilitated discussions resulting in the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogical Society becoming the official county historical society.
“It was the first time all of the historical societies had sat down to address current and future needs.” says Foundation executive director, Mindy Knappenberger. The Foundation provided a neutral table to increase collaboration and provide an option for funding available through the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission.
The option involved designating an official county historical society. The six local societies discussed, listened, and questioned. Together, they made a unanimous decision to choose an official history center and the Armstrong County Historical Museum and Genealogical Society received the title. The entire group joined the Foundation to propose the choice to the county commissioners, and it was approved.
“Serving as a catalyst for the historical society effort helped move ideas into action plans.” says Knappenberger. Now, Armstrong County can apply for funding from the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission. The societies were able to create an agenda to increase group collaboration and define goals. A dialogue began that promises teamwork and assessment.
